Why Can't I Relax Even When Nothing Is Wrong?

You finally have a quiet evening. Nothing is on fire. No one needs anything from you. And still, you can’t relax. Ugh! You notice the signal of heightened stress. You’re holding your breath, your mind is still racing and your jaw clenched. Basically, your body hasn’t caught up to knowing that, in this moment, you are safe. If you’re asking yourself, why can’t I relax even when nothing is wrong, you’re not alone, and nothing is wrong with you. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do to protect you from some perceived threat. For a lot of us, especially folks who grew up in homes where things could quickly turn into an unsafe environment, “calm” never meant “safe.” Calm sometimes meant the lull before the storm. So your body learned to stay braced, even in the good moments. Sometimes, especially in the good moments, because good moments can feel unfamiliar, even suspicious.

Why Can’t I Relax Even When Nothing Is Wrong: It’s a Body Question, Not a Willpower One

You don’t need to try harder to chill out. You can’t think your way into safety if your body has never fully felt it. This is where, what we therapists call “a bottom up approach” is needed. What this means, is that your body stores the trauma so we need to work with your body to release the trauma. In therapy, this is where somatic work, like Expressive Arts therapy, Brainspotting, gentle body-based practices and nature therapy can help. They help because the body stores the trauma, and these approaches work with the body. Yes, I repeat myself, but this is so important. I notice that often, my clients blame themselves, even when they have learned that it’s the nervous system that keeps them in a state of anxiety or stress even when things are calm. With these other approaches, like creative therapies, somatic body based approaches, nature and EMDR, we aren’t just talking about what happened. We’re helping your nervous system have a different experience, in real time, in your body.

What I See In Sessions With Clients

In sessions, I often see a shift happen slowly over time. I can see subtle shifts, like when a person’s breath drops lower or they take a deep sigh. They feel, maybe for the first time in years, what it’s like to just be, without bracing for the next thing. That’s the work. Not forcing relaxation, but building the conditions where your body can find it on its own.

This takes time, but here is one approach you can use.

If you’re asking yourself, “Why can’t I relax even when nothing is wrong?”, try this. The next time you notice yourself tensing up in a calm moment, just name it. “I’m safe right now, and my body doesn’t believe it yet.” It’s not my fault. This is good information. Remember that this is your nervous system telling you where the work is.
